These days fitness is big business, with yoga at the forefront for health conscious devotees. The health benefits include lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety, increased strength and flexibility. Its popularity in the media has made it much more accessible thanks to the likes of Madonna. There are many different types of yoga, such as Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram and Vinyasa so there is alway a style to suit your level of experience.

Hotpod Yoga has been paving the way in Worthing and has been teaching the downward dog for over two years. At Hotpod Worthing they have a vast schedule of classes between 7am and 8.30pm, so there is always a class to fit around busy lifestyles. They practise a style called Vinyasa Flow in a purple pod which is heated to 90C. I myself have been to a couple of these classes and although I found them challenging, I absolutely loved it. The class left me with a sense of clarity, feeling aligned, cleansed and as if I could take on the challenges of the day. It is something that I could whole heartedly recommend.

I sat down with owner Katie Robertson to find out about her own unique focus.

What was your background?

I worked in Advertising & Marketing for Capital Radio in London, as did my husband. Like all love affairs with the city, you eventually find yourself hating the rat race. Living and working in London took its toll, I found an escape through fitness. Back in 2004 I took a personal training course, but my passion was yoga. I wanted desperately to become a yoga teacher. I realised my dream by taking a ten week course in LA and was trained by the infamous Bikram Choudray.

What was the inspiration behind Hotpod Yoga Worthing?

Every month we would travel down to Shoreham to see our friends who lived on a house boat. It was pretty idylic and we loved Shoreham, the pace of life down here is so much more relaxing than London. As a family it became harder and harder to find the enthusiasim to go home. That is when we had our epiphany moment and decided that we wanted to move down here and start up a business of our own. We had heard of Hotpod Yoga through a friend of ours and it was really popular throughout London, so we decided to take a leap of faith and just go for it.

Have you faced any setbacks?

Oh god, too many! Our son Rex was six months old when we found a house and a studio. We moved in April and then I found out that was pregnant with my daughter - Bonnie, but we perservered with the studio in Worthing. However, it was such a challenge as it is not possible to do Hotpod Yoga when you are pregnant.

How did you overcome them?

It was an oversight on my part and so we had to source yoga teachers to cover all of my classes for six months. It wasn’t an ideal situation, it had to work, there was no other option. Luckily, we launched and the business has gone from strength to strength.

What has attributed to your success?

Thats easy, sheer determination! We now have a business that fits around our family life which is what we set out to do in the begining. Also I think seeking out a strong team has helped. All of our teachers have been with us from the start. Most of our teachers came from personal recommendations. As for the studio, well, the area really needed it. We knew that there would be a following as the nearest classes were in Brighton.

If you could do it all again, would you do anything differently?

The whole process has been a learning curve, it has made the business what it is today. Maybe a different venue would have been easier but we are happy with how things have turned out.

Describe Hotpod Yoga Worthing in one sentence?

A sweaty, purple, other worldly, womb like pod of bliss!

Do you have any exciting plans for 2019?

Currently we are working on our marketing, we want to get more people through the door and make it a yoga community. A yoga hub that is accessible to the masses, that would be cool. Obviously expansion is always good and we would love to add another area to the business.
