PASTA PERFECTION AT ARUNDEL'S PAPPARDELLE RESTAURANT
It is 7pm on a Saturday night and I am sitting in a Pappardelle restaurant sharing anti pasti, bread and olives with my partner in crime. All washed down with a rather large glass of Valpolicella. This restaurant has long been a favourite of ours and tonight does not disappoint.
Pappardelle occupies the upstairs of Osteria restaurant in Arundel, it is a family run business that was established in 1988 by Bruno and Clive Mina. It specialises in rustic Italian food from the Veneto area. The food all served up on either slate boards or gleaming white plates. Mains are reasonably priced and cost north of £10. Very rarely can you get a late table as it always gets fully booked. The restaurant is bright and decorated in typical Italian style of rustic wooden furniture. It has a romantic feel as the restaurant is always bathed in candlelight.
On this occasion for our starter we went for the sharing platter of flavoursome Italian meats, creamy cheeses, beautiful sundried tomatoes, with plump olives, crunchy and salty cornichons with the most amazing rustic breads. It was an absolute feast.
As the starter was cleared away the incredibly friendly waiter told us all about his home back in Italy. The staff make you feel so welcome, they are efficient to a fault, always circling the room to see if anybody needs anything. This I find is a mean feat, especially as so many restaurants fail miserably at this by either constantly asking if the food is acceptable or by neglecting the customers to skulk off into a dark corner.
For our main course we were persuaded by the staff to try the special, which was a beautiful fresh pasta with pancetta, a creamy white wine sauce and fresh peas. It had an amazing depth of flavour and was incredibly authentic, trust me I know as we have spent a lot of time in that particular area of Italy.
If you are looking for authentic, simple, unfussy Italian cuisine then Pappadelle should definitely be top of your list. The food is excellent, the wine is great and the service is what you would expect from a family run restaurant, simply put, their passion shines through,
