FINDON'S FRENCH FANCY AT THE GUN
This week I ate the second best lamb of my life. The Gun Inn is Findon's best kept secret. Nestled at the foot of the south downs this country pub is a real treat. They have a vast menu focusing on different dishes each night, however the real jewel in the crown is french night. Every Tuesday the staff dressed in black and white striped attire reminiscent of days in Limoges.
Arriving slightly late (I know, completely unprofessional and simply a shocking way to behave) we were shown to our seats. A beautiful spot near the log fire in the bar dining area. I don't know about you but the smell of a log burner has something satisfying and homely about it. So with that in mind we were already off to a great start.
The waitress kindly brought over our menu and explained the concept behind it. It's very simple, three courses for £20 which also includes a glass of wine. Sold!! The menu has an array of french dishes to choose from, trying to go with light choices I chose Spring vegetable frittata to start and my partner could resist the charcuterie board. Both dishes we delightful.
Moving on to the main courses I chose braised lamb shoulder with tender stem and the most amazing dauphinoise potatoes that I have ever had the pleasure of eating. My partner went for the steak (dont all men?) which looked delectable. Gladly I am told that the home made garlic aioli that is was served with was second to none.
Not wanting to be defeated I reluctantly opted for pudding although by this point I was pleasantly plump from all the food. I went for the creme brulee (9/10 times I do as its my favourite), as you can imagine it was delicious and the shortbread just crumbled in your mouth.
I cannot stress how great this pub is. If it is a chilled date night on a Tuesday that you are looking for then The Gun should be a strong contender. Nourriture incroyable the french would cry if the ever had the pleasure of eating in this outstanding restaurant, plus the service was great. So for me it was a clear winner all round. It is simply a real find.
