POLPO: VENETIAN SHARING PLATTERS IN THE HEART OF BRIGHTONS LANES
It is not often that I get to enjoy a night out with Mr Splendour, so when I do get a chance, I grasp it with both hands. Luckily we recently had the chance to savour Brighton’s best kept secret – Polpo. Located in the heart of Brighton’s lanes, Polpo offers a vast array of Venetian sharing dishes.
The decor is a modern industrial take on Venetian interiors, reminiscent of the authentic Italian restaurants found in New York, with vintage style red ox blood leather seating and dark wooden bistro sets. Exposed wall bricks add to the dark and moody feel and complement the vintage tube station wall tiles. There is a fabulous bar near the entrance, which offers another unique area to eat or to savour a bracingly bitter Old-Fashioned cocktail.
As soon as you enter the restaurant you are hit with sensational scent of garlic and herbs. The staff are warm and approachable, while the menu is inexpensive and full of all the Italian delights that make dining enjoyable, such as Arancini, Spinach & Egg Pizza or Crab Linguine.
After being shown to our table, we casually pawed over the menu, there is so much to choose from, all of which sounds delightful. The waitress came over to take our drinks order, Mr Splendour – an avid lover of red wine, decided on the Montepulciano, which was a glorious choice.
Luckily, we had pre-empted the size of the menu and left room for a handful of dishes. The waitress was knowledgeable and suggested some of the staff’s favourites. We decided on Mushroom Arancini, Grilled Focaccia with Olive Oil, Spinach, Parmesan & Soft Egg Pizzette, Spicy Pork & Fennel Meatballs, Sautéed Tiger Prawns with Chilli and Zucchini, Basil & Parmesan Salad. Whilst writing this list, I can’t help but think that it sounds like too much food, however, there was a perfect amount of each dish.
The simple zucchini salad was blanketed with a rich parmesan cheese and came out with the spicy pork and fennel meatballs which were coated in the most amazing tomato ragu type sauce, the remnants of which were mopped up with the focaccia bread by none other than Mr Splendour. Honestly - I can’t take him anywhere! Next up was the mushroom arancini balls and the sautéed tiger prawns, they were cooked to perfection, the flavours was sensational with a touch of heat and a distinct hint of garlic, a real homage to the dishes that you would find on your summer holidays in the Mediterranean. Lastly the Pizzette came out, which was definitely our favourite dish, it was a light take on a spinach and egg pizza and the flavours were glorious, in fact I could have eaten two.
Following all those sharing platters, we couldn’t say no to a pudding, although we were already quite full, so we had to share one. We decided on Hot Chocolate & Cornetti pudding which is an Italian take on chocolate bread and butter pudding, it was phenomenal, the chocolate was so rich and was complemented by the homemade vanilla ice cream.
Polpo is a real winner in my eyes, the food is outstanding and the relaxed atmosphere offers the perfect place to dine, whether you are looking for a romantic meal for two or a casual meal for all the family. The menu is exciting, inexpensive and authentically Italian. Definitely one to watch!
